Pennsylvania provides a civil remedy to protect a person against abuse. The court system can be utilized to seek protection including, but not limited to, eviction of the alleged abuser from a residence or other location, prohibiting contact, temporary custody or visitation, removal of weapons, and financial compensation for losses suffered as a result of the abuse.

County agencies often assist a party in filing the protection from abuse complaint and in speaking with a judge ex parte (without the other party being notified and without the other party being present because of extreme urgency) to determine if a temporary order is appropriate. After the complaint and ex parte appearance before the judge, an evidentiary hearing will be scheduled at which the alleged abuser will appear. Levin Hoover can help prepare and provide assistance at the Protection From Abuse evidentiary hearing.
